What is Karate
Today, there are many different types of martial arts, most of them are developed in Asia. Karate, which means “empty-hand,” is known in most parts of the world as a Japanese martial art. And that’s true. Today’s karate started in the Ryukyu Islands (nowadays called Okinawa), the southern islands of Japan, and was brought to the main island around 1920, by Gichin Funakoshi. However, history tells that originally, karate was developed in China, or even further back in India. Today there are so many styles of karate that it is difficult for a person not familiar with the martial arts to know the differences.
Our style, Kyokushin Karate was established by the legendary karate grandmaster Masutatsu Oyama in 1956 and has been called the strongest karate since then. Kyokushin Karate has made it’s own name and position throughout the world having over 10 million practitioners these days. Kyokushin style of karate is a realistic karate style.
Through your karate training, you can achieve the physical and mental strength, needed not only for your training, but creating a better life for yourself.
Our karate style uses a belt system for students to indicate their progress in learning the art. The belt colours are white, orange, blue, yellow, green, brown and finally black. Achieving the first black belt grade can take five to seven years of training. The Kyokushin black belt is one of the most respected and valuable Dan (black belt) degrees in the martial arts world.
